Description
black smoke tom with golden eyes
Duskstar is a rather large tom with a thin frame. His fur is different to that of most Riverclan cats, and is both dense and long. This makes swimming an understandably more laborous task for him compared to his clan-mates, but the added difficulty has ever made it less attractive. His body is given added bulk by his fur, while the majority of the tom is quite small and compact. He has strong shoulders and hind-legs, with large, flat paws that are adept at both dealing strikes and paddling through water.
Duskstar's fur itself is a combination of black, white and grey, all of which shade together in even tones. His base fur colour is dead between black and cinder grey, with lighter highlights on the tips. He has something of a silver 'collar' around his neck, which is simply a band of lighter fur about 5cm thick. His eyes are one of his more noticeable features, being a bright yellow-gold. They contrast starkly to the dark fur of his face and as such can appear luminescent in the light.
Personality
Duskstar is a jovial and light-hearted creature by nature. Whenever in an awkward situation, he tends to laugh, be it at others or at himself. He is a rather good-natured and calm individual, and while it is possible to stir him to nature, it is not commonly done. While he is a gentle and kind creature, Duskstar often finds it difficult to have faith in himself, and as such can have low-self confidence. However, he knows all too well that if he questions himself, others will too, and so he tries to avoid it. He's relatively closed off and can be shy or reserved around those he doesn't trust, though strangely he's ridiculously open around strangers he does.
Duskstar is protective of those that he cares about, and tends to adopt them into his 'family'. While he is afraid of letting others get incredibly close to him due to his perceived 'curse', he enjoys the company of others and selfishly indulges in it. Due to this he is more often than not dwelling in more than a little bit of guilt at any one time. He takes it as a sign of weakness, and as such will allow that much and nothing else. The tom's flippant nature can keep most individuals from getting close to him, with his jobial nature easy to get along with, and good at hiding what he is really feeling.
History
Dusk-kit was born at the time of silver-lining, when the sun and moon sat in the sky together. Outside of the Riverclan camp, the she-cat Rivermoon gave birth to three kits, two boys and a girl. They were fathered by Dryfrost, a Riverclan tom who was also present at the time of the birthing. The three kits were named Dusk-kit, Thistlekit and Jaykit, with Jaykit and Dusk-kit being dark pelted like their father and Thistlekit bearing the silver-cream fur of his mother. The three kits were welcomed into the world with cheer and peace, and for a time they new calm.
Growing up Thistlekit and Dusk-kit were close. Thistle-kit was a natural leader which drew company of the other kits around him. Dusk-kit being something of a joker was more likely to prank the other kits than get along with them, but with Thistlekit's accepting and encouraging nature, his acceptance of his little brother was more than enough to make the other's tolerate him. Jaykit, being quiet and shy found herself always at the back, though no less a part of the group. As the kits continued to age, the parties thinned out and more solid friendships began to form, focusing more on kits closer to their own age, and so it was that the three siblings were named apprentices with two of their closest friends.
Named Duskpaw beside his brother, sister and two other kits Bluepaw and Ratpaw, Duskpaw was given the mentor of Runningcreek and began training immediately. The somewhat flamboyant tom always managed to find something to laugh about, greatly aggrieving his mentor most days. He quickly learned that not everyone was as forgiving of his idiotic tendencies than Thistlepaw was. Most days he found himself working late in the elder's den or with the medicine cats, having been punished for one prank or another. After a few of these occasions however he was barred from the medicine cat den, after using deathberry juice to dye Runningcreek's fur red. That action kept him confined to camp for a month.
Duskpaw was quickly falling behind in his training, what with his shenanigans keeping him in constant trouble. Runningcreek's teaching methods were simply not working for him either, and his easy-going personality commonly grated against that of the strict she-cat's. Often times he spent nights wishing and dreaming for a new mentor. Chance would have it that a moon later Runningcreek was by the gorge when one of its edges collapsed and drowned. Often times after that Duskpaw blamed himself, and lot quite an amount of both sleep and food in his guilt. He was perhaps more so guilty over his perceived blame in the incident, rather than Runningcreek's actual death, which only made him feel worse in the long run.
Before long he was given the new mentor of his own father Dryfrost. Considering his past experiences with Runningcreek, Duskpaw had become more somber and willing to throw his all into training. He had little to motivate him other than his desire to not be left behind however. He still lacked a goal in life. Little after a moon had passed before Dryfrost caught a case of greencough and landed himself in the medicine cat den. Around that same time his siblings, ahead of him in their training, became warriors alongside their childhood friends. Jaywind, Thistlemane, Bluefrond and Ratshade all moved to the warriors den and left Duskpaw with a younger generation that he tended to annoy or ignore more than befriend. Very quickly Dryfrost passed away from his sickness, and with his second mentor dead, Duskpaw was beginning to think himself cursed. Reluctant to let his third mentor Goldsplash befall a similar fate, Duskpaw began training alone in the dead of night. The sooner he became a warrior the better, was his mentality.
Thankfully, he was named a warrior before anything could happen to Goldsplash. He was named Dusklight for his bright eyes and cheery personality, which had begun to reappear as the moons of peace passed. Finally able to join his siblings in the warrior den, Dusklight couldn't be happier. Everything was quiet for a few moons and Dusklight settled into his warrior duties well. However death soon returned to him when Ratshade and he were on a walk together by the Windclan border. The two met a fox and after a brief encounter, Ratshade was killed. Bluefrond was heart-broken, having fallen for the tom, and spent the next six moons withering away to nothing in the medicine cat den until she too, died.
At the age of twenty-one moons Dusklight received his first apprentice, an event that terrified him. Memories arose of his own adventures with his mentors, and he became quickly afraid that his apprentice would meet a similar fate. The young she-cat Dustpaw was a mirror image of Dusklight when he was young, but perhaps more innocent. Happy, cheerful and altogether pure, every day they spent together made Dusklight dread more and more about her up-coming death.
Three moons into Dustpaw's training she, Dusklight, Thistlemane and another warrior Rowanleaf were hunting when they stumbled across a snake sunning itself near the Thunderclan Sunning Rocks. When they were attacked Dusklight was sure this was the moment in which he would lose his apprentice, though he needn't have worried. They fought the snake off, but Rowanleaf died in the process. They returned back to camp with heavy hearts, and no more than a few moons later Dustpaw became Dustmask without another incident to her name.
Riverclan's old deputy Spottedtail was forced to retire during Dusklight's thirtieth moon, and with one apprentice tucked under his belt tom was named deputy. With all the death's surrounding him, Dusklight had been finding it hard to remain upbeat, however with his naturally joyful personality he was managing. He certainly wouldn't have been able to do it without his brother though, Thistlemane was his pillar of support. Five moons later Dusklight had barely taken on his deputy duties when the current leader Waterstar lost his final life. With little else to do and finding himself more than a little lost, Dusklight stepped up to claim his position as leader.
